Among Grumbacher fans, there is a little confusion among our three most popular whites: Pre-tested™ Titanium White in original and soft formulas, and the Finest™ Superba White. Here is a breakdown of the differences between these exquisite whites. Most painters are familiar with an original formula Titanium White. It is the most opaque white with the strongest tinting capabilities. The thicker, heavy-bodied feel holds up when mixing with any color, and it is most desired when strong opacity is required. Our original formula Titanium White is mixed with Linseed Oil, ideal for heavy-duty performance. Pre-Tested™ Titanium White in the soft formula is particularly a favorite among tole painters and crafters, but also a favorite among beginning oil painters. It is non-yellowing and opaque. The titanium white is ground in poppyseed oil and sunflower oil which extends the dry time and gives the paint a soft-bodied, easy to manage feel---nice for those who don’t want to work at their paint. It is perfect for artists who don’t intend to do a lot of mixing with white, and is ideal when painting wet on wet. Finest™ Superba White is the only product left from the old Finest™ oil line originally mastered by Grumbacher. It offers another different quality to the other Pre-tested™ whites in that it is mixed with poppyseed oil and walnut oil, with a touch of Spike Lavendar oil. It is also non-yellowing, opaque, and extremely permanent. The Spike Lavendar oil serves as a natural non-toxic alternative to turpentine, and therefore is a diluent to the paint. It gives more bite to the pigment, providing superior adhesion to the canvas. It has a tendency to self-level, and is excellent for those painting delicate, detailed lines. |

As the Spring season slowly (a little too slowly here in the Northeast!) makes its way towards us, I am reminded of how wonderful it is to have so many great Grumbacher supporters among professional artists and professors across the United States, and how many more of these relationships blossom each day. Whether it's guiding a student through their first use of Damar Matte Varnish or collaborating with a seasoned painter on the best paints to use on a vinyl sculpture, I have a tremendous amount of fun exposing people to great art supplies. Thank you again for all your support, and please let me know if you need any help with your spring project. Whether it is a lesson on solvents or a pair of my custom made bunny ears, we are ready to make your Spring a fun and productive season! Best wishes, Director of Education, |
